The story of Atlantis is the story of real community spirit in action. It's a story of a community, which pulled together to raise millions through its own efforts, to give the town of Oban a sports centre it could be proud of.

Behind the massive efforts of fundraising and generosity from the Oban public and the town's businesses, a small group of dedicated individuals devoted themselves to getting the Atlantis Leisure project up and running. These ten directors came together to form the Oban and Lorn Community Enterprise Company Limited. Negotiations with the council were concluded and the company took over the swimming pool on the 1st of October 1992.

Within a year the Atlantis Leisure Fund (ALF) was at a total of £335,000, a significant part of the funding coming from North British Trust hotels as well as local fund raising including the buy a brick campaign. The National Lottery donated over a million pounds to the project to get it off the ground.

The name Atlantis Leisure came from a pupil at Oban High School who won a competition run in primary and secondary schools to come up with a name and a company logo. Seventeen year old Deirdre Anderson came up with the name 'Atlantis Leisure' and in recognition of that she was invited to accept the keys at the official handover from Willie Young, Argyll and Bute's director of leisure at the time.

A year on year programme was devised which in turn contributed to the success of our organisation. The 'vision' was to take the pool as it existed and build a sports hall in the gap site, to extend the children's play area, build a floodlit outdoor pitch and to modernise the remaining facilities.

In 1998 a new six-court sports hall, café, gym and health suit opened its doors. Since then there has been constant improvements not only within the building but also to the numbers of activities provided. Further building upgrades have included an all weather 5-a-side pitch, three level soft play and climb cube as well as pool plant upgrade and a new bio-mass boiler behind the scenes. At present the centre is heavily fund raising for a new play park and an upgrade on outside facilities. Have a look at our timeline to see everything thats been happening over the last twenty years!
